003 | Coats

Coating a wooden surface (aka Veneers) can cost between INR 85 to 450 Per SFT. It is imperative to set a budget before buying any wood. Let us elaborate.

Coating wood is generally more expensive than the wood itself. Why does any wooden surface need to be coated? Firstly, it projects the colour and the figures of the wood. Secondly, it protects the wood from moisture, besides protecting it from general wear and tear. NO, it isn’t optional. Different coats can be used depending on the wood and the end consumer.

Coats are essentially a liquid resin (plastic), mixed with a hardener and sprayed onto the surface of the wood. What’s different is the resin (plastic) used and how much of it is used. We’re going to talk about 3 common coats (in order of cost): Melamine, Polyurethane (aka PU) and Acry-Lamination (aka Lamination).

Let’s start with Melamine. It’s the oldest form of coating and costs ~ INR 75 to 100 Per SFT. The second one is PU. It’s an updated resin costing ~ INR 175 to 200 Per SFT. It’s a far superior finish compared to Melamine and also lasts a lot longer. Melamine and PU are used for Deep Matte finishes. Last one is Lamination. It provides the ultimate gloss and costs ~ INR 450 Per SFT. It’s expensive because it’s between 12 to 15 layers of coats and a lot thicker.

Choosing is tough. We get it. As an end user, it is important to talk to your designer and contractor to understand your needs and the cost implications. It’s okay to create samples of different coats and then decide.

PS: Melamine, PU and Lamination can be used to create coloured surfaces, PU being the most preferred.

Note: At Oblique, we sell oil-based coats that are like Melamine or PU, but Applicator-friendly. It’s something we’re deeply passionate about but that’s for another blog.
