PolyMethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) or Acrylic is one the coolest materials on the planet. It is strong, scratch resistant and most importantly, super transparent. Be it a set of lenses or high-end medical devices, Acrylic is everywhere.
It is widely used in the design business too. We’re going to talk specifically about Acrylic laminates on this blog and try to draw a comparison with paper-based laminates.
Acrylic is a truly transparent material and projects the true version of any colour added to it. Imagine adding colour to water versus adding colour to milk: Acrylic is like water. Acrylic laminates reflect close to 100% of light, leading to the ultimate gloss. These are full body laminates, meaning the edges are the same colour as the surface. When it comes to solid colours, Acrylic laminates are the best option, without doubt.
Paper-based laminates, on the other hand, are available in woods, stones and also solid colours. They are the most common form of laminates available in India. They are manufactured in India and are relatively cost effective.
If you’re designing your space, you could use both. A classic way is to use a wooden (paper-based) laminate with a solid colour (acrylic) laminate. Besides Acrylic, other options like PETG or PVC are also available in the market. More on that later.
